The story of how Vegas Nights Live came into being is one worth telling. In their own biogs you will see that there is a common thread of the local competition called ‘Search for a Star’ running through the story of each of the three members of our vocal trio.
Derek won it in 1999 with the Barry Manilow classic ‘I write the Songs’
Robin entered 2 times as a solo artist, his best result being second with ‘This is the Moment’ in 2001.
Dean won with his rendition of the Sammy Davis Jr song ‘Mr Bojangles’ complete with whistling intro and outro and a little tap dance in the middle. In fact having won in 2005 He went on to win the All Winners show also in 2005.
The competition was run by the Conchord Band and their guitarist and leading light Frank Osborne, in 2006, started up a choir for local people with the aim of having another musical outlet for people in East Grinstead and the surrounds.
Derek and Robin both joined and in a tea break at one rehearsal, for some reason, started singing the Everley Brothers’ ‘Dream’. They were quite amazed at how well their voices blended and the plan was hatched to enter the 2007 Search for a Star’ competition as a duet. Their audition piece was ‘Dream’ and they were chosen to go on to the live competition. A big band number was needed and ‘Me and my Shadow’ was hit upon as a showcase for their talents.
They won the competition and flushed with success decided that they should put on their own show. A tribute to the Everley Brothers called ‘Foreverley’ was a minor hit in 2007 at the Chequer Mead theatre, nominated for Best Show in the Debra's awards that year. Having seen the success of Dean in the locality Derek and Robin invited Dean to guest on their Foreverley show. With the germ of an idea in mind they performed a classic Rat Pack song ‘Kick in the Head’ as a trio inviting the audience to say whether they felt a Rat Pack show with the 3 of them the following year would be a good idea. There was sufficient encouragement for the idea to be transformed into reality and ‘Vegas Nights’ played in two venues around Sussex in 2008.
Since then Dean, Robin and Derek have performed their magic in various venues at weddings and birthday parties and revues. They have started to add songs from other genres to give an evening of variety whatever the occasion.
